International impacts in Indicators Aotearoa

Wellbeing goals

Indicators Aotearoa (Ngā Tūtohu Aotearoa), developed by New Zealand’s National Statistics Office, presents the big picture of the lives of New Zealanders. More than 100 indicators were chosen to monitor progress on social, cultural, economic, and environmental wellbeing. This includes indicators on the impacts of New Zealand on the rest of the world in terms of:

Climate

  • Consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions

Financial and physical capital

  • Direct investment

  • International investment position

Waste

  • Export of waste (net and gross)

Human capital

  • Net migration by skill type (no data)

Economic standard of living

  • Official development assistance

  • Remittances to other countries (no data)

Natural capital

  • Net greenhouse gas emissions

The Indicators Aotearoa monitoring framework is more comprehensive than the smaller set of indicators that are part of the New Zealand Treasury’s Living Standards Framework, which is used more directly to inform policy decision-making. Unfortunately, in the ‘International Connections’ section of the Living Standards Framework dashboard, which can be found under ‘Our Institutions and Governance’, only the indicators related to trade and foreign direct investment have been carried over and no other indicators on New Zealand’s environmental and social impact elsewhere have been included.
